Kids Water Intake Calculator

Children are not small adults — their hydration needs follow different rules. This free kids water intake calculator gives a daily target based on your child’s age group, using widely referenced pediatric intake values.

Targets include water from both drinks and food (about 20% comes from food).

Why kids need different targets

Children have a higher surface-area-to-body-weight ratio than adults, so they heat up faster and lose fluids more quickly — especially during play and sports. At the same time, kids are easily distracted and often do not notice thirst until they are already dehydrated. That is why scheduled drinking matters more than thirst for children.

Signs of dehydration in children

  • Fewer wet diapers or less frequent urination
  • Dark yellow urine
  • Dry mouth and lips
  • Unusual tiredness, crankiness, or dizziness
  • Fewer tears when crying

If your child shows these signs — especially with vomiting, diarrhea, or fever — contact your pediatrician promptly.

Easy ways to keep kids hydrated

  • Offer water before sugary drinks — every time.
  • Send a labeled water bottle to school and sports practice.
  • Serve water-rich snacks: watermelon, oranges, grapes, cucumber.
  • Make it fun: silly straws, fruit-infused water, or a sticker chart.
  • Set the example — kids copy what they see.
